Is it your fault your baby has a flat head?

Is it your fault your baby has a flat head?

For nearly three decades, parents have diligently followed recommendations to back sleep their infants to reduce the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Despite this, one in four babies develop some form of head flattening. This is common and not your fault. Contrary to popular belief, this process has nothing to do with having a 'soft' head or malleable bones. It is exclusively the result of growth displacement around a point of contact. While back sleeping is safe, it can sometimes lead to changes in head shape, as shown in the image below.

Remember, you’re following important safety guidelines to protect your baby’s health. Head flattening can happen despite your best efforts. You are a wonderful parent, doing your best for your baby! Stay positive mama, and reach out for support if needed.
